Artist Selection Guidelines
Greywood Arts prioritises the creative process and looks for artists who can clearly articulate or otherwise demonstrate their practice, process or methods. We seek artists with a strong sense of purpose or a clear “why” motivating their enquiry. Their vision must be authentic and compelling. We look for a rigorous approach to practice and a sincere desire to engage with our community of place.
We look at:
- Work Samples – does their past work move or excite us? Is it thought provoking? Have they demonstrated both passion and skill?
- Ambition – does their current proposal move or excite us? Is it thought provoking? Have they demonstrated both passion and skill?
- Feasibility – do we have confidence in their ability to achieve their proposed idea?
- Track record –can we see a progression or development in their work? Have they delivered on past projects? This will be weighted less for early career artists.
- Benefit – how will this opportunity affect this artist at this stage in their career? Where applicable: have they demonstrated need? How will their offering benefit our local community?
- Values – We believe artistic excellence is achieved when we work with artists whose values and ethos resonate with Greywood’s. We value curiosity, vulnerability, authenticity, thoughtfulness, integrity, risk-taking, play and dialogue.
- Practicalities – Do we feel this will be a pleasant person who will contribute to a harmonious residency atmosphere? Can we accommodate the needs of this applicant and their project?
Selection Panels
The panel set evaluation criteria for each project, and where appropriate will design a scoring metric to support the decision making process. Our core selection panel is comprised of Artistic Director Jessica Bonenfant, board member and practicing artist Danny McCarthy, and an independent artist TBC for 2026. For Seeing the Wood for the Trees projects Philip Ryan of Nocht Studio is also on the panel. Often a representative from the community will join the final round of selection.
Independent practitioners who join the selection panel uphold the ideals and ethos of Greywood. In the case of co-creation/arts participation projects the panel will design a way for the community to have a voice in the selection process for true collaboration with constituents.
